Bioversity Welcomes New Staff: Vee Carey

Bioversity is thrilled to welcome a new member of our team, Vee Carey, who started earlier this year as our Student Engagement Specialist. Vee brings excellent experience and relationships across the Merrimack Valley and Boston that will help us build a deeper student application pipeline in those regions. Please help us welcome Vee.
Tell us about yourself. What were you doing before Bioversity?
Prior to Bioversity, I was working as the Program Manager at a national nonprofit that conducted business accelerators for local entrepreneurs. In my role, I led the Spanish-language Business Accelerator program for the Merrimack Valley region (Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell and surrounding communities).
Before that role, I had worked in advertising technology, multilingual community outreach, and coaching.
Tell us about your new role at Bioversity – What will your day-to-day look like?
My day-to-day at Bioversity is dynamic and keeps me on my toes. My main focus is centered on cultivating community partnerships and creating pipelines for career pivoters and job seekers interested in hands-on technical fields to learn about Bioversity’s programs and pursue career transitions into the life sciences. Additionally, I support students and instructors onsite at our Lowell program from UMass Lowell’s campus.
What are you most excited about in your new role?
I’m most excited to see individuals embark on career paths that may surprise them. I love helping people discover new opportunities and avenues for success they may not have previously considered. As a Merrimack Valley native, I’m also very excited to reach community members ready to launch new careers in the region through our Lowell program.
What does Bioversity’s mission mean to you personally? And how does it connect to your own values?
My connection to Bioversity’s mission is multifold. As a queer and trans individual who navigates healthcare spaces, I have witnessed firsthand how essential it is that the life sciences and biotechnology industries develop a workforce reflective of the people it serves. In addition to representation, I’m driven by our mission of fostering economic mobility through socially impactful careers. To me, this work is about sovereignty, helping others build the financial agency needed to move through the world with greater peace and integrity.
How do you think your background and skills will contribute to your work at Bioversity?
I think that my background in small business development, community outreach, and entrepreneurial coaching prepares me to support and encourage job seekers to expand past their comfort zones. My experience in outreach has taught me how to build authentic pathways by meeting people where they are, while my coaching background allows me to help individuals identify transferable and perhaps untapped talents and translate them into a competitive advantage in today’s rapidly evolving workforce.
What is something that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a karaoke fanatic. While my musical chops are quite far from perfect, I have a lot of fun bringing the intensity to the stage and belting out Latin American pop ballads. My go-to is “Todos Me Miran” by the iconic Gloria Trevi!
